Jungle Cruise Disneyland Park

disneyland jungle cruise

In Tokyo Disneyland, the station and surrounding area are themed to a more upscale African city, as opposed to an isolated jungle outpost. This version shares a station building with the park's steam train ride, Western River Railroad. There are 12 vehicles, with a maximum of 9 in operation at any given time (8 with guests and 1 training vehicle). The boats in 1955 were painted as clean, idealized replicas, but have since been given a more realistic theming reflecting the grunge and wear of actual watercraft due to the addition of Indiana Jones Adventure and its ruggedness. While several beloved Disney rides have stood the test of time, others have faced issues or declined in popularity to the extent that they were removed.

A studio recorded soundtrack of the Jungle Cruise was released in 1968 by Disneyland Records included as the B side of the album Walt Disney Presents The Enchanted Tiki Room and the Adventurous Jungle Cruise (ST-3966). The Jungle Cruise attraction has always featured narration by a live Disney Cast Member; for the release the narration was provided by Thurl Ravenscroft. This soundtrack was also used in Disneyland television features as early as 1964. The Magic Kingdom and Tokyo Disneyland attractions are very similar to each other, with the exception of a few minor differences.

Tour Changed From Educational to Comical

While they can control the speed of the boat and move it forwards and backward, the track guides the boat along the Jungle Cruise's journey. This way, the skippers can focus on bringing the adventure to life with their wit and “niles and niles” of punny jokes. Since it opened in Disneyland Park in July of 1955, Jungle Cruise has become one of the most iconic attractions in Disney’s theme park catalogue. From early November through approximately the first week in January, the classic attraction dons holiday decor, ushering guests into a yuletide wonderland. This joyous holiday makeover, accessible to all park visitors and not exclusive to Christmas event party-goers, brings a delightful twist to the Jungle Cruise experience. The animatronics and scenes get a festive facelift with whimsical decorations, and even the jokes take on a special holiday flair.

Real Animals Were Considered Before Audioanimatronic Animals

However, despite its beloved stature, the attraction has met its fair share of controversy over the years, which has led to numerous changes, including a major refurbishment in 2021. If you have comments or tips to share with others about touring Disneyland, please email us. The jokes are no better in California, and the only major difference is that the Anaheim ride doesn't have a cave section. When Walt Disney bought the Dominguez family's land for the park, they asked him to spare it. Disney obligated and moved the 15-ton plant from the parking lot area to its current location.

The vessels then drift into a small pool where a pod of hippos try to tip the boat. Several feet ahead a rhino is seen chasing a safari group up a tree while several hyenas look on laughing. In the early days of envisioning the Jungle Cruise, Walt Disney himself dreamt of infusing a touch of authenticity by featuring live animals on the attraction. His passion for creating immersive experiences led him to contemplate the idea of incorporating real wildlife to bring the jungle to life. Maintaining the well-being of the animals, ensuring their safety and the safety of the visitors, and the unpredictability and inconsistency of live creatures in a controlled environment posed significant hurdles. In January 2021, Disney announced one of the most major refurbishments of the attraction.

Jungle Cruise, formally named Jungle River Cruise, is a riverboat amusement ride located in the Adventureland themed section at various Disney theme parks worldwide. The attraction is a simulated riverboat cruise that travels along a waterway using a concealed guidance system through areas with Asian, African, and South American themes. Park guests board replica steam launches from a 1930s British explorers' lodge, and Audio-Animatronic exotic animals are displayed throughout the ride. A live Disney cast member acts as a tour guide and boat skipper that loosely follows a rehearsed script, providing passengers with a comedic narrative.

Magic Kingdom

I personally took every chance I could to involve each kid, grandmother, or family in my spiel to make them feel as special as possible. Disneyland’s Jungle Cruise is one of the attractions that I love to ride each trip! Being that it is one of the 12 opening day attractions that still exist, it has definitely stood the test of time (and corny jokes) to be one of the busiest attractions at the park. This was due partially to the cold French climate not being hospitable to water rides and partially because there were several knockoff Jungle Cruises already built at various French amusement parks. One of the first attractions Davis – who would go on to become one of the company’s most influential Imagineers – worked on was Jungle Cruise. A visual comedian by nature, Davis decided to liven up the attraction by adding the playful elephant pool and comical trapped safari sequences.

The boats then drift past an Indian elephant and her calf playing in the water, followed by another elephant showering in a waterfall. A large bull Indian elephant emerges from the water squirting a plume of water at the boats with the guests narrowly avoiding the free shower. Inside, a peacock is seen showing off his feathers as well as some king cobras, giant spiders, monkeys, and a Bengal tiger can be found.

To many of the jungle cruise skippers who existed in the late 1960's and early 70's, the spiel was everything. At Imagineering in the mid-seventies, I had the honor to work along side many of those who you have pictured in your historical photos, such as Marc Davis, Herb Ryman, X. Attencio, Bob Gurr, and John Hench, among others. A portion of the nearly two dozen Indian elephants being added to Disneyland's jungle river cruise is viewed here in the artist's sketches. Big ones and "little squirts," the elephants will frolic and splash in the waters of Adventureland beginning in June.

The queue was designed to wind about extensively so that guests may see all of the different artifacts in the queue. As more technologically advanced attractions have been added to thepark over the years, the Jungle Cruise has, by comparison, lost some of itsluster. Though still a good attraction, it offers few thrills and no surprisesfor Disneyland Park veterans, many of whom can rattle off the ride’s narrationright along with the guide.

It also helps give the illusion that the water is much deeper, like it would be in the wild. This thoughtful technique ensures that guests remain fully immersed in the jungle ambiance. The result was a small group of perhaps 6-7 skippers whose humor could be described as a mix of Steve Martin, Chris Rock, and a touch of Don Rickles. It was all carefully thought out ahead of time, since a major aspect of our fun and success was audience involvement in our spiel.

The attraction was in the opening day roster of the park, and has remained open and largely unchanged in theme and story since then. In 1994 the river channel was rerouted to make way for the queue buildings and entrance courtyard of the Indiana Jones Adventure. In this exploration of the Jungle Cruise's hidden wonders, we'll delve into the secrets and behind-the-scenes tricks that bring this jungle to life. This includes the meticulous craftsmanship, the clever storytelling techniques that unfold along the riverbanks, and the artistry behind creating an immersive experience that has stood the test of time. Being the first (and only) artificial taxidermist seemed to be quite a trial-and-error job for a while, but there really was little time for guessing with about 210 immediate unfurred and unfeathered customers. Bob worked on acrylic, nylon and orlon furs, tried all kind of dyes to see which would work on water animals, which would fade in the hot summer sun and which could withstand constant animation movements.
